Could someone tell me how to count the number 
of words in Vi or under UNIX shell ?

Yes, that's easy: Just type

	:!wc -w % <CARRIGE RETURN>

in command mode to get the number of words, or

	:!wc % <CARRIGE RETURN>

to get the number of lines, words and characters.

In vi:
	:w !wc -w
	  ^
          ^ this space is essential.

In the shell:
	wc -w filename
