This repo contains the information in the vi archive and FAQ at:
ftp://ftp.uib.no/pub/vi/
as of March 2017.
The archive, lovingly curated by
Ove Ruben R Olsen <ruben@uib.no>
with contributions by many, many people (see WHO), was widely
available via FTP but its availability now is somewhat more limited,
so I place it here for posterity and public availability.
The archive's canonical home was the ftp site at alf.uib.no, with
many mirrors available, but in early 2017 I found it very hard to
locate an ftp site which was a) still up and b) still had a copy
of the archive. In fact, I failed, over the course of an evening's
effort, to locate an extant copy of the archive. Finally, just
before giving up and going to bed, I hit upon the notion of using
ftp.uib.no, instead of alf.uib.no. It worked!
There are enough great ideas and constructs in here to raise anyone's
vi game, and lots of items of historical interest. (There is also a
nifty little perl script called vifs, which allows one to 'push'
documents on to a stack, and 'pop' back to them.)
I never knew that before Vim stood for ViIMproved, it stood for
ViIMitation! (See the README for version 1.27 of vim: Readme.vim in
programs/).
